Openarms Family Homes is a privately owned and operated treatment program, licensed by the Ministry of Community and Social Services, to provide specialized care to children and adolescents. We have developed several parent model foster homes for children with varying degrees of physical and/or developmental challenges in the Eastern Ontario Region.
Each home is licensed for up to four children. The foster parents are assisted in the daily care of the children by child care workers (when required) and, as necessary, by a registered practical nurse overnight. Each foster family is closely supported by an Openarms Foster Family supervisor, who will provide counseling and direction to the family and child.
The children to whom we provide care are described as hard to serve such as those which fall within the following categories:
Medically Fragile
Physically challenged
Multi-handicapped
Developmentally challenged
Pervasive developmental disorders
Within these categories are varying degrees of involvement. Our agency serve those children whose physical/developmental involvement is moderate to extreme.

Specially trained staff offer the continuation of school and treatment schedules. They also offer special activities that make the childrens' stay as enjoyable for them as the break is for their families. The Regular Program allows a child with a physical disability to stay at the home for short periods (a few days, a weekend, a couple of weeks) or in the case of a family emergency.
The Short Stay Respite Day Program allows a child to visit for the day only (8:30-3:30) during the school year, thus allowing families to complete their day-to-day chores. Children in half day school programs may be able to stay on a daily basis in exceptional circumstances.
The Regular Planned Relief Program dedicates four beds to enabling families to send their children every seventh week during the school year. The children come from Sunday evening and stay until Friday when they are discharged to school or picked up by 3:00 p.m. On two occasions families can attach a weekend at either end to allow them a full week's break.
A nominal fee is charged for each day or portion of a day used. Financial assistance may be available through Respite Plus (at Service Coordination) or the Assistance for Children with Severe Disabilities (at the Ministry of Community and Social Services).
How to Apply ?
To gain admission for their child with musculoskeletal or neuromuscular disabilities, parents must complete the required information forms. Forms may be obtained from your social worker or directly from the home. Families are encouraged to visit the home, meet the staff, and have a look around before using the service.
